Author's Note작가의 말

At the northern edge of the earth there is a stretch of land called 'Alaska 1002'. The wind there is fierce enough to keep predators away, which makes it the last paradise where reindeer give birth and rest a while. But human pipelines have reached out over that old road like black veins. While we gain our comfort, the reindeer are losing the path they have followed for thousands of years. 지구의 북쪽 끝, '알래스카 1002'라 불리는 땅이 있습니다. 거센 바람이 천적을 막아 주는 그곳은 순록이 새끼를 낳고 잠시 쉬어 가는 마지막 낙원입니다. 그러나 그 오래된 길 위로 인간의 송유관이 검은 핏줄처럼 뻗어 왔습니다. 우리가 편안함을 얻는 사이 순록은 수천 년 이어 온 그들의 길을 잃어가고 있습니다.

Standing before that road I thought of two reindeer: a wild one left alone after losing its family, and one inside a ranch fence that had been given the name 'Bird'. What does it mean for an animal to have a name? Is it protection, or is it a mark that you can never go back to the forest? 저는 그 길 앞에서 두 마리의 순록을 떠올렸습니다. 가족을 잃고 홀로 남은 야생의 순록과, 목장 울타리 안에서 '버드'라는 이름을 얻은 순록이었습니다. 동물에게 이름이 있다는 것은 무엇을 뜻할까요. 그것은 보호일까요, 아니면 다시는 숲으로 돌아갈 수 없다는 표식일까요.

In the 'reindeer cyclone' — hundreds of reindeer racing in one vast circle — I saw a dignity that goes beyond survival. To hold that weight I cut paper again and again and stacked it in layers, and tried to carve into the laser-cut layers the time of the road the reindeer have kept for so long. Now Bird sets its name down, and the reindeer walk on toward the road they lost. I hope The Reindeer Cyclone becomes a small bridge laid across it. 수백 마리의 순록이 거대한 원을 그리며 질주하는 '순록의 태풍'에서 생존을 넘어서는 존재 그 자체의 숭고함을 보았습니다. 그 감각의 무게를 담기 위해 종이를 수없이 잘라 겹겹이 쌓았고, 레이저 커팅으로 만든 층 사이에 순록이 오래 지켜 온 길의 시간을 새기고자 했습니다. 이제 버드는 이름을 내려놓고, 순록은 잃어버린 길을 향해 다시 걸어갑니다. 『순록의 태풍』이 끊어졌던 순록의 길 위에 놓이는 작은 다리가 되기를 바랍니다.
